Atlanta Country Club
In 1965, William Byrd laid the original design for Atlanta Country Club. Bobb Cupp and Jack Nicklaus later modified the course. The club reopened in March 2024 after a thorough renovation led by Beau Welling. The renovation involved new grass, rebuilt greens, and extensive bunker renovations to increase playability for members and guests while attracting top-tier tournaments back to the club.
Most of Welling's work respected Byrd's original design, except for the par-three fifth and par-five eleventh holes, which were significantly redesigned. The bunker strategy was recalibrated, and hazards now feature liners to improve conditioning.
A crucial aspect of the project was installing a Hydronics temperature control system under each green to ensure optimal putting surfaces throughout the year. The greens now feature 007XL bentgrass, while the fairways have been grassed with Zorro Zoysia.
Founded in 1968, Atlanta Country Club hosted the PGA Tour’s Atlanta Classic for 30 years, the 1968 USGA Men’s Senior Amateur Championship, and the 1971 USGA Women’s Amateur Championship. Atlanta Country Club was also the site of the first Players Championship, won by Jack Nicklaus in 1974. It will now play host to NewClub Atlanta's first Intraclub Team Championship this coming August.
